Cooling Tower Filtration System

Cooling Tower Side Stream Filtration Skid

This is a cooling tower filtration system for a Data Centre in Singapore. There are 23 Cooling towers in the building and there is 1 of this system beside every cooling tower. The cooling tower helps to produce chilled water to cool the building, hence it requires a lot of water to operate. In order to save water, the cooling tower water is reused by passing it into this side stream filtration system. The side stream filtration system will filter the water to only allow solid particles below 0.1 microns to pass through.

Ultra-Low Harmonics VSD

For this project, we used an 11kW Ultra-Low Harmonics VSD. The ultra-low harmonics VSD comes with a built-in optimized DC choke and a low-pass filter to comply with IEEEE519 and G5/4 requirement. For more information of the VSD, refer to ABB ACH580 Catalog (https://new.abb.com/products/3AXD50000038994/ach580-01-026a-4).

This VSD will reduce the harmonics content to the motor, thus ensuring that the total harmonics distortion in the power system is kept to the minimum. The unique part about this VSD is that the display can be taken out and the setting of the VSD can be cloned onto another similar VSD. This makes programming of the system much easier and convenient.

For the double door panel, we did a small cut-out so that operators can see the VSD display parameters without opening the panel. The parameters include, frequency, motor running current, etc.

Centralised PLC

This is the Centralised PLC panel that controls all the 23 sets of side stream filtration system. For this system they require redundancy, therefore 2 CPU is used to control 1 Input/Output board. Redundancy means that if in an event of 1 CPU failure, the 2nd CPU will takeover with no down time.

We suggested to use a HMI for this panel so that the user will be able to see the whole process in its entirety and changes can be made during the T&C process to make it more user friendly to the user.
